Inserting Symbols

Using the right symbol at the right place is an important part of any professional publication. With Tópico, you can insert any symbols you need to use by selecting from an menu or through one of the preconfigured editor toolbar.

Inserting a symbol with the toolbar

You can insert a symbol with the help of the XStandard toolbox. To display the XStandard Symbols toolbar, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Content tab;
  2. Click on the Tools button above the editor;
  3. From the popup menu, select Symbols.

The symbols toolbar give you access to commonly used symbols.

You can also use the Symbol button to define other symbols you'd like to be able to insert easily.

I you need to insert other symbols, then the Symbols popup menu is for you.

Inserting a symbol with the popup menu

You can define a list of symbols for each collection you create. Of course, saving you symbols list in the default collection will make them accessible to any new collection you create.

The symbols list that's currently in the default collection has "curly" and «French» quotes readily available. These symbols are defined in the symbols.xml file that's found in a collection's root folder.

Here's what this file looks like:

You can add any sysmbol's unicodecode point in this file an it will be available through the popup menu.

Tip

If you insert the left curly quote when some text is selected, the right curly quote will appear after the selection. In fact, if some text is selected, Tópico will try to insert the next symbol in the list after the selection.

You can also visit How to find an &#number; notation for a character for a good reference on the subject. Make sure you try the search engine for unicode characters. There is also this online database that might be useful in your search.

Tip

Someone working exclusively on Windows in could also use the Wingding or other common font to insert symbols. Inserting small images throught the Insert button might also be considered in some scenarios.
